Standing in their way is the Sheriff, who is played by each of the players in turn. On their turn, players have an opportunity to draw a number of cards representing trade goods – some legal, some not so much. They then place a number of goods into a sealed bag, hand that bag to the player acting as Sheriff for the round, and declare what goods the bag contains. Once all of the players’ bags have been handed to the Sheriff, the fun really begins. The Sheriff has the option of either allowing a bag to pass or inspecting the goods. While the Sheriff deliberates the merchants can offer bribes, threaten retaliation on future turns, or strike whatever other deal they can dream up.Īt the end of negotiations, the Sheriff either allows the goods to pass, or inspects them. On the other hand, a Sheriff that wrongly inspects an honest merchant pays a fine as well! Contraband that is caught is forfeit, and the would-be smuggler pays a fine.

The game lasts until each player has had two turns as Sheriff. At the end, the merchant with the most wealth in gold and goods is declared the winner.Ĭomponent Quality: The primary components in Sheriff are cards, cardboard tokens for coins, and cardboard play mats representing your merchant stand. All of these are of good quality and heavy stock. The other component is a set of colored cloth bags, which players use to conceal their cards when handing goods to the Sheriff.

Sheriff of Nottingham is the first game in the Dice Tower Essentials Line from Arcane Wonders. The Sheriff must then determine who gets into the city with their goods, who gets inspected, and who may have their goods confiscated!ĭo you have what it takes to be seen as an honest merchant? Will you make a deal with the Sheriff to let you in? Or will you persuade the Sheriff to target another player while you quietly slip by the gate? Declare your goods, negotiate deals, and be on the lookout for the Sheriff of Nottingham! Players declare goods they wish to bring into the city, goods that are secretly stored in their burlap sack. In Sheriff of Nottingham, players will not only be able to experience Nottingham as a merchant of the city, but each turn one player will step into the shoes of the Sheriff himself.

Should you play it safe with legal goods and make a profit, or risk it all by sneaking in illicit goods? Be mindful, though, as the Sheriff always has his eyes out for liars and tricksters and if he catches one, he very well may confiscate those goods for himself! However, players must first get their goods through the city gate, which is under the watch of the Sheriff of Nottingham.
